Mark your calendars for 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 26th! You won’t want to miss our upcoming ‘Public Forum on Mid-Rise Development’, which we are co-hosting with the INTBAU Guelph Chapter and Heritage Guelph. The traditional character of Guelph does not have to be lost, even through a period of rapid growth; it can actually be reinforced. Come and hear how higher population densities have been realized, sensitively, through the effective use of contemporary 4 to 6 storey buildings.

Discover what is already being done, here in Guelph, by our local development community, to recapture our traditional expertise in this important building type. And find out about promising opportunities that may make mid-rise buildings even more important than they already are, for both affordability and sustainability.

There will be presentations of great interest to everyone:

1- ‘Lessons from Cologne’ – Unto Kihlanki, Architect, Principal of Talo Architect Inc.;

2- ‘Mid-Rise Residential – Affordable, Sustainable Alternatives’ – Grant Roughley , President, RHC Design-Build.

3- ‘Market Commons Condos – Achievable Home Ownership’ – John Farley, Development Consultant, Creating Homes.

After the presentations there will be a panel discussion, featuring our presenters and notable local experts in the field of urban development, followed by a question period.

So bring your curiosity, and your point of view: we want to hear from you too.

“A microcosm of various cultures and occupations is reflected in the architecture and streetscapes of this once thriving hamlet. Bisected by the old Brock Road, the main route from Dundas to Guelph, Morriston once provided services for area farm families and thirsty teamsters. In recent years it has suffered as a bottleneck on Highway 6, with its outdated route through this tiny village. Learn what to look for if you find yourself sitting in traffic there.”

The River Remembers – Ecological and Heritage Walking Tours

OPIRG is hosting their annual Ecological and Heritage Walking Tours of the Speed River as it flows through the city of Guelph.

Knowledgeable tour guides will discuss the compelling history of our local river as well as native and invasive plant species. Attendees will discover why Guelph was settled around the river, how human settlement has affected the health of the river, and learn about efforts to revitalize the river ecosystem.

Tours will take place Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, July 26th, August 2nd and 9th; and Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00pm, July 31st, August 7th and 14th. All tours will begin outside the Boathouse at 116 Gordon Street. The tour route is wheelchair accessible. There is a suggested donation of $5, all proceeds of which will be donated to the Speed River Project river revitalization and the architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Guelph-Wellington chapter.

May 18, 2011. Last Meeting of the Season!

Is it that time of year already? This year has just flown by and we’ve seen a number of excellent presentations that have given us great insights into the rich architectural history of Guelph and the surrounding area. Our last presentation for the season with Thomas Nietmann is slated for this coming Wednesday, May 18 and it promises to be a very enlightening presentation on traditional masonry.

Thomas Nietmann is a local craftsperson and owner of Gateway Solutions based in Guelph. For over 20 years, Thomas has helped design and create security systems, network systems for computers, audio and video systems and commercial cabling of all types. Gateway’s extensive experience in all phases of construction and installation provides fast and comprehensive installation, meeting the latest industry specifications.

On May 18th, Thomas will be presenting some slides and talking about his experience at the INTBAU Traditional Masonry Workshop where he participated in the restoration of a stone church in Transylvania, Romania in 2010.

Hello everyone,

Topic: The History of Sleeman House/Manor

Speaker: Troy Bridgeman

Troy is a multi-media journalist who regularly contributes articles, columns, features and video to the Guelph Mercury and the Waterloo Region Record. One of his niches as a journalist has been researching articles on heritage buildings in the city. This has allowed Troy to pursue his passion for history and meet many historians and notable personalities from Guelph. Some of Troy’s works include published stories and videos on The Gummer Building, The Albion, Van Gogh’s Ear, the 6167 Locomotive and the Manor.

We look forward to Troy’s presentation, which promises to be an evening full of surprises and a wonderful trip down memory lane. Hope to see you all there!
